A lot has been said and written about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s love story and relationship. Much of that information comes from Harry himself, as he revealed many intimate details about their romance in his book Spare.
In his 2023 autobiography, the Duke of Sussex revealed that his romance with the former Suits actress began on a very special day; one that held importance in both Prince William‘s and Prince Harry’s life. The love-stricken Duke praised Meghan Markle‘s beauty in the chapter where he shared how their roller-coaster romance began. He also revealed that he asked Meghan to go to his place on their first date but she turned him down.

Harry and Meghan’s common friend introduced them online
It was Prince Harry and Meghan’s common friend Violet von Westenholz who became the cupid in their relationship. Meghan caught Harry’s eye after Violet posted a video trying out the viral dog ear filter with the former actress. “I’d never seen anyone so beautiful,” the love-struck Harry wrote in Spare.
“There was an energy about her, a wild joy and playfulness,” he writes. The Duke goes on in his book about being hypnotized by Meghan’s “luminous, angelic face.” After getting smitten by Meghan’s charm, King Charles‘ second son messaged Violet asking who Meghan was. He approved of Violet passing on his Instagram handle to Meghan.
It was Friday, July 1 and Harry was set to leave for British entrepreneur Sir Keith Edward Mills’ house. When he was packing his things, he received a message saying “hello,” from his now wife. “She complimented my Instagram page. Beautiful photographs” he wrote. That began the duo’s roller-coaster romance.

Couple chatted for hours on Princess Diana’s birthday
After Meghan’s first message to Harry, the lovers went on an unstoppable chatting spree. They talked about various things such as the aid work they had both done in Africa and their other travels. Soon, their conversation moved to texting after they exchanged phone numbers.
The next morning, Harry left Nottingham Cottage and was glued to his phone texting Meghan the entire ride to Sir Keith’s place. “I couldn’t type fast enough. My thumbs were cramping,” the Duke writes.
“There was so much to say, we had so much in common, though we came from such different worlds.”
The two could not get enough of their conversation and that is when Harry had the realization that their first DMs to each other and “marathon conversation” had begun on July 1, 2016, his late mother Princess Diana’s fifty-fifth birthday.
